Email list management…
A term that is relatively new to email marketing. The word email list manager in itself tells you enough: someone who manages your email list. They take care of all the needs people in your list may have.
But what is it exactly? Why is it different from copywriters, virtual assistants, traditional email marketers and doing email marketing yourself? And more importantly, which one is right for your business?
With this article, I want to show you the key differences between what an email copywriter, technical virtual assistants and traditional email marketers do… And of course what I do as an email list manager.
So let's dive right in to what each of them does so we can figure out what you need.
Email Copywriters
Email copywriters generally only write the copy for your emails. Email copywriters focus on storytelling and sales when they write your emails. This is usually where someone starts, and also how I was guided to email list management. (more on that in a sec.)
Email copywriters don’t hold into account what words may trigger promotions and spam filters. Neither do they really see the results of what they write. They simply write the email and then send it over in a GoogleDoc or similar format.
Technical Virtual Assistants
A virtual assistant usually is someone who helps you with administrative tasks. And I get why you would want your VA to work in your email software. This will make sure that the email gets sent, which if you have to do this yourself or have like a general manager do this, it isn’t their priority. So a VA is a safe bet.
They know how to set up automations but from my understanding, they don’t usually dive deep into improving your email marketing. They aren’t specialists as they’re good at everything you need help with, like replying to emails, adding a page to your website, etc.
Traditional Email Marketers
Email marketers take another step, which is good! They have the strategies you need for your automations, promotions and regular broadcast emails. They’ll run split tests to see which subject line works best for your audience and actually look at the data so make the next move work better.
With an email marketer. you’ll generally don’t have to do anything anymore as they take care of your email marketing for you.
Email List Managers
Email list managers take it another step further. The added thing they do is deliverability. Deliverability is where in the inbox your emails land. This makes a MASSIVE difference in how much money you are going to make. (which I explain in this article)
In short: email deliverability is decided by 3 factors:
IP reputation. This is like your virtual neighborhood. If you live on a street with nice houses and perfect lawns, people are going to think highly of you. People in this case are Gmail, Outlook etc. So having a good IP address can make or break your success with email marketing
Domain reputation. Your domain is what comes after the ‘@’, and you share this with anyone within your company. This would be the reputation of your family or friend group. If everyone around you is respectful and kind, other people are going to think you are respectful and kind, too.
Content. This is the one everyone knows of and something some VAs and most email marketers also take into consideration. Content is from name, subject line, images, links, link text and body text. (importance in that order)
How do you decide what your email marketing needs?
Now, this might surprise you. Because not everybody needs an email list manager. I’ve analyzed over 500 different email lists over the past year and this is what I’ve come to:
If you email weekly and you have a small list, you can have great success with your email marketing with either a copywriter or a VA. You can even do it yourself if you want. Just some basic practices are necessary: like keeping your list clean, setting up the right DNS settings and testing your emails before you send them.
Are you an e-commerce business, you probably aren’t going to use a VA or a copywriter only, because you need a solid sales strategy. E-comm emails are generally accepted to land in the promotions folder(but never in spam) a little more than service based emails. Therefore, you can do great with a traditional email marketer. But if you want to stand out against your competitors, working on email deliverability can make a great difference. So you may want to consider working with an email list manager.
If you have a big list, you really want to scale quickly, and you just want to make the most out of email marketing. You’ll either want an email list manager or an email marketer who is geeking out over data so much that he will learn deliverability, as well.
