How Did I Get Into Fitness and Copywriting?
As a passionate business owner in the fitness industry, you only want to work with people who share the same passion for helping people like you do. To get the best results from your fitness marketing plan, you want to be on the same page with everyone involved.
If you’d like to make sure that we are a great fit before we hop on a call to discuss your needs, this blog is for you. I will explain how I started my fitness journey as well as my copywriting journey. I’ll also touch on why I am passionate about helping you find new members and clients.
Snowboarding injuries
I first stepped on a snowboard when I was 11 years old. It was the second time we walked up to the ski school to get me into a snowboarding class. They told us I needed to be 12 the previous year, so my mom lied and said I was 12. The cashier told us I had to be 13, and I remember very well how I looked up to my mom, signing her to speak up. I wasn’t going to wait another year.
A few hours later, I was walking up the hill, fighting for my first feet on a snowboard. The instructor didn’t speak my language and to be quite frank, I was not having a great time at all. Yet somehow, I fell in love…
The next day I got passed on to a better snowboard class because I picked it up quite easily compared to the rest of the group. The better group turned out a little too fast for my skill. I fell and broke my wrist on that second day of snowboarding. I cried a lot that day because it meant that I had to wait a whole year until I could get back on a snowboard
It has been 19 years since that day, and don’t act surprised when I tell you that there have been a few more injuries. – starts counting – There have been about eight injuries since that day. Some have been minor, some have been pretty serious and scary…
One of them was a broken ankle. In November 2020, I inconveniently sat down on my own ankle while skateboarding. Three fractures and torn ligaments (syndesmosis) as a result. I realized that this was my best chance of committing to the gym. It was now or never!
A long procrastinated dream
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to go to the gym to get stronger and grow muscles. The anxiety and insecurities definitely kept me far away from gyms, though. The gym can feel so intimidating, and I can really relate to your customers and clients here 😌.
But having to learn how to walk again, I needed a physiotherapist for sure. I found a physiotherapist, who is a skateboarder himself. This is really helpful when you’re a snowboarding and skateboarding enthusiast like myself. When I learned that he also coaches skateboarders to get stronger and helps them to be less prone to injuries, I was sold. I started working out with him even before I could even walk, and he helped me get back on my feet again, literally.
Fast-forward a couple of months, there was no need for me to drive down to get a session in with him twice a week anymore. I was lucky to notice how much stronger I got over those months. These results – along with the procrastinated dream of getting stronger and the fact that I’m getting older – made me want to continue visiting the gym. And I’m not planning on quitting snowboarding and skateboarding, ever.
How fitness changed my life
So I did the unimaginable… I signed up for the gym. And let me tell you, the months following were sooo stressful! But I made it through thanks to having a coach. I would visit my physio/coach monthly, and he provided me with a program to follow. The first months, I’d feel sick right before heading to the gym. Overwhelmed with anxiety and insecurity, I would force myself to go because I knew what the outcome would be.
I kept going.
These days, rooms full of people don’t scare me anymore. My body feels more comfortable – being comfortable in your skin is a thing, I swear 🤯.
Going to the gym consistently also gave me discipline. I get way more stuff done that I don’t necessarily enjoy, but know will benefit me in the future.
Why copywriting?
Okay, you’ve learned about my gym journey. How did I get into fitness copywriting?
Well, I’ve always wanted to start my own business. I just never knew what kind of freelance business would suit me best. Over the past ten years, I’ve tried many things. But when my coach dropped the word copywriting, something happened.
First, I googled what copywriting was and let anxiety decide it isn’t for me. The thought settled, and I realized it is actually a great idea :).
Now, I can help people who help people like me get connected with people like me. That’s amazing!
Through fitness copywriting, I can help people get started on their fitness journey. Bringing valuable information to them and make sure they feel related to. And then, when they do sign up for your gym or program, they get to experience all the amazing benefits you and I already have experienced by working out.
Fitness marketing and fitness copywriting
Not only is marketing important for your business’ revenue, your business also makes peoples lives more enjoyable. We can show people that fitness is a journey and fitness can be so much fun.
You already understand how important marketing is. I’d like to give you a few examples of why marketing is basically pointless without a fitness copywriter:
Your website can look amazing. Without the right wording, no one will understand the value you provide,
Your content can be great. Not speaking to your customers and without a powerful and clear call-to-action, you’re not getting conversions,
Your sign-up button can be perfect. Without the understanding of why they need to sign up for your gym specifically, they might turn to a cheaper option.
Do you think we are a good fit?
Let’s hop on a call to discuss your needs and wishes. There are plenty of fitness marketing ideas we can discuss and dive into. I’m looking forward to meeting you and helping more people feel better about themselves through your business!
